(1) Stoker Bruno Darby
One of the crewmen of lost with the sinking of H.M.S. Beverley was Stoker Bruno Darby of 17 Bowthorn Road, Cleator Moor, Cumberland, one of the sons of James Darby and Anne Darby (née Hillon). The following article appeared in local weekly newspaper 'The Whitehaven News' on Thursday 6 May 1943 (page 4):
Cleator Stoker Missing
Mr. and Mrs. J. Darby, Bowthorn Road, Cleator Moor, have been notified that their son, Bruno Darby, 21 1st Class Stoker, serving with the Royal Navy, is reported missing, presumed killed, on April 11.
Before entering the Navy, Stoker Darby worked at Moresby Coal Mine and also in a R.O. Factory.
Mr. and Mrs. Darby were bereaved some time ago when their son, Joseph, died after a short illness. They have received many messages of sympathy.
The following week, on Thursday 13 May 1943 'The Whitehaven News' printed a copy of Bruno Darby's photograph with the following text:
Cleator Moor Stoker Killed
Mr. and Mrs. J. Darby, Cleator Moor, have officially been notified that their son, Stoker Bruno Darby, previously reported missing was killed in action on April 11. Aged 21 years, Stoker Darby was employed at Walkmill Colliery, Moresby and a R.O. Factory before joining the Royal Navy.
