Some biographical details

Gunner Charles Young (1920 - 1943) from Whitehaven, Cumberland (now Cumbria) was a pre-war Territorial. With the likelihood of war being declared, Gunner Charles Young was called up on 19 August 1939.

He died on 28 April 1943 from wounds accidentally received while on active service in India. Earlier in the war, Gunner Charles Young had served in Norway, at Tobruk in the Middle East and Ceylon. Gunner Charles Young's final resting place is at Ranchi War Cemetery, India (Grave Ref. 1.F.5).

In pre-war civilian life Charles Young had been employed by a painter by Mr. F. Pattinson of Whitehaven. He had also been a keen cyclist and a member of Hensingham Cycling Club.

Charles Young was one of four sons of William Young and Mary Young (née Myers) to serve in the Army during WW2. The family home was at 52 Windermere Road, Woodhouse, Whitehaven. He is commemorated on the St Begh's R.C. Parish, Whitehaven WW2 War Memorial and the Borough of Whitehaven 'Book of Remembrance'.

A family prayer at a time of loss

Charles Young's family placed the following notice in the local newspaper, 'The Whitehaven News', in May 1943, after being informed of his death:

Young -
On April 28, 1943, died on foreign service (India), Charles, the dearly loved and youngest son of Mr and Mrs William Young, 52 Windermere Road, Woodhouse.

Our Lady of Lourdes,
Intercede for him.
