Biographical information
Sub-Lt. (A) Cyril Moore, RNVR, was the eldest son of Cyril Moore (Snr) and Bridget Moore (nee Sharp). Cyril Moore (Jnr.) was educated at Whitehaven County Secondary School and St Bees School before entering into the family firm of furnishers and cabinet makers. In WW2 the family home was at 50 Loop Road North, Whitehaven. Cyril Moore (Jnr.) was an outstanding sportsman, particularly as a rugby player and long-distance swimmer.
In January 1943 Cyril Moore (Jnr.) joined the Fleet Air Arm as a pilot, undertaking his training in both Britain and the USA. He completed his training just before Christmas of the same year. He was then attached to 1846 Naval Air Squadron and granted a commission and obtained his wings.
At the time of his death on 9 August 1944, Sub-Lt. Moore was on active service in the USA. HMS Saker was the Fleet Air Arm accounting base at Brooklyn, New York, USA. He is interred at the Portsmouth Shipyard Cemetery, New Hampshire. He is commemorated in the Borough of Whitehaven 'Book of Remembrance', the St James WW2 War Memorial and the Whitehaven CSS (Grammar School) Memorial.
