Additional information

The present British Museum in the Bloomsbury district of London [Photograph No. 1] is the most visited tourist attraction not just in London but in the whole of Britain. Its foundation goes back to the Age of Enlightenment and especially its 'founding father', Sir Hans Sloane (1660 - 1753).

Adjacent to the main entrance museum is the museum's war memorial remembering the former staff of the museum who died in the two World Wars [Photograph No. 2]. The upper part of the memorial commemorates the dead of the 1914 - 1918 war [Photograph No. 3]. After the 1939 - 1945 war the names of those who died in that war were added beneath the original memorial [Photograph No. 4]. Each year at Remembrance time tributes are placed at the memorial [Photograph No. 5].

Those who are remembered

The upper part of the memorial lists the names of former staff who died in the First World War, reads as follows:

"To the Memory of the Men
who went from this museum
and fought and fell in the Great War
1914 - 1918

Ian A.K. Burnett; Frank Derrett
C.R. Dunt; W.J. Eden; S.W. Littlejohn
H. Michie; John F.T. Nash; E. Pullen
J.M. Seeley; R. Sheehy; A.C. Stewart

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them."
...............

The lower part of the memorial, remembering former staff who died in the Second World War, reads as follows:

"1939 - 1945

Peter Alderton
Harry C. Lamacraft
Harold R. Mills
David G. Wye"
